Gorgeous gulf fritillary

Gulf Fritillary at Long Key Natural Area and Nature Center

Today, while strolling through the ephemeral wetland habitat at Long Key Natural Area and Nature Center, I stopped and peered into a spot where I often see ladybugs. I was pleasantly surprised to see this gulf fritillary. It seemed so shiny and still that it may have just emerged and been drying its wings. Within the once-green (but now brown) foliage, it looked pretty amazing ... almost as if parts of its wings were painted in gold leaf.
