Wooly Bear

Salt Marsh Moth Caterpillar at Long Key Natural Area and Nature Center

At first glance, it never seems like anything much is happening in the ephemeral wetland habitat trail at Long Key Natural Area and Nature Center in Davie, but if you pay attention to your surroundings  you're bound to see some interesting beetles, chrysalides and tiny butterflies you may not have seen before. Also, there are plenty of grasshoppers which I rarely see these days. Occasionally, I spot these very large caterpillars, which I now know are Salt marsh moth caterpillars (Estigmene acrea) and often called wooly bears.
