Dove crops

Doves, White-Winged Doves, Crop, South Florida, Colleen M. Dougher, The Invisible Fly

The first time I saw a dove with a bulging neck, I thought it had some kind of a problem ... but the bulge is, in fact, a problem solver. Each dove has something called a crop, an expandable sac at the base of the neck where stored seed can be moistened and later digested or fed/regurgitated to their young in the form of "crop milk."
