Zebra longwing caterpillar

Zebra longwing caterpillar

Yesterday, I found this zebra longwing caterpillar crawling around on a tomato stake that now serves as a passionvine trellis. I believe the caterpillar, which was looking pretty fat and contemplative, was searching for a place to make it's next amazing transition.

I didn't see him out there this morning, but I fully expect to find a chrysalis soon. Then again, maybe not. Zebra longwing chysalides are typically very well hidden in the garden. Sometimes I don't notice one until it's empty and the beautiful zebra longwing butterfly has emerged and is hanging from it, drying it's wings.
