I love seeing black-bellied whistling ducks but typically only encounter them at Green Cay Nature Center or Wakodahatchee Wetlands. I had never seen them at the little lake behind where I live. Then one morning several months ago, I walked down to the water and saw eight of them standing really still like statues and just staring at the water for a really long time.
The whole scene felt surreal. They were apparently traveling ducks and were gone after a few hours on the lake. I never saw them again. Even now it feels like a dream. But I'm glad I have this photo because no one else was around so I may have been the only one who witnessed this ... and it seemed so very special and wildly out of the ordinary.
